When my husband and I were on our honeymoon on the Big Island of Hawaii, we came across this big green sea turtle on the beach. These Hawaiian Sea turtles are a sight to see in real life. Although, you are not allowed to get super close to them because of their endangered species status, having a zoom lens helped me get a close-up picture.

This is a green sea turtle photograph taken in Hawaii when I was on my honeymoon in September of 2011. We were at a black sand beach on the Big Island and all of a sudden, we saw this turtle coming to shore from the Pacific Ocean. It was a sight to see! We weren’t allowed to touch it or get very close at all. I used a telephoto lens to zoom in and take this photo.

We were at the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach on the Big Island when we saw this green sea turtle. It is considered one of the best places to see sea turtles on the island. Sea turtles are seen here almost daily, and it didn’t disappoint us! Not only is it a treat to see giant sea turtles come to shore, but the black sandy beach is a fun sight to see as well.

Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles Quick Facts
- The green sea turtle is also known as the green turtle, black turtle, or Pacific green turtle.
- All sea turtles are listed as endangered species in the United States. This means any physical contact with a sea turtle is prohibited. Research has shown that since becoming endangered, the turtle population has increased.
- They are native to Hawaii and are most common in Hawaiian waters.
- Hawaiian green turtles can reach lengths of four feet and up to 300 pounds.
- The green turtle is the largest hard-shelled sea turtle.
- Females crawl out to find nesting beaches and lay eggs during the night
- Mature sea turtles find most of their time in shallow waters along the coastal lush seagrass beds.
- Their lifespan usually falls between 60 and 80 years old.
Turtle Watching Tips
- Keep your distance and stay at least 15 feet away.
- Do not touch them.
- Do not harass them.
I started out using 35mm point and shoot cameras, then upgraded to a 35mm DSL camera when I was in college. Finally, the world of digital DSL cameras was introduced. Gone are the days of having to wait for your film to be developed to see what you captured. From that point on, photography has been so much fun!
As a photographer, I draw inspiration from both the natural world and human experience. I strive to capture moments of raw beauty and to use photos as a testament to the power of storytelling through imagery. I am a firm believer that memories last a lifetime and are more precious than any physical thing you could own. Through my lens, I like to provoke connections between the viewer and any memories my photographs can bring back to life.
